CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NSW SPORT

Prior to 1995, Catholic schools in NSW lacked opportunities to participate in state and national school sport pathways. Seeking to remedy this, a group of advocates petitioned the NSW state government for an equality of accessibility.

This advocacy bore fruit when, in 1995, NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC), MacKillop and Polding teams participated in the NSW All Schools and NSW Primary School Sports Association (NSWPSSA) events. These events saw Catholic school students compete against students from both the NSW Combined High Schools (NSW CHS) and Combined Independent Schools (CIS) for the honours of state champion and possible selection into NSW School Sport teams. Those selected would compete at Australian School Sport Championships.

The Catholic Sports Coordinating Committee (CSCC), oversaw the implementation and the continuance of the sport pathway program for Catholic school students.

In 2012, the 11 NSW Dioceses formed Catholic Schools Sports Services (CSSS) for the purpose of taking the sector into a new phase and expanding the service, giving additional support to the Dioceses.

In 2019, Catholic Schools NSW brought CSSS in as a sub-division to be known as Catholic Schools NSW Sport. The aim of the division remains the provision of sporting pathways opportunities for students & staff in NSW Catholic schools ensuring diversity and inclusiveness.

NSW COMBINED CATHOLIC COLLEGES

New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) is the pathway for students in all Catholic Secondary Schools in NSW to compete at NSW All Schools Championships and events.

In 1995, the 11 NSW Dioceses, under the guidance of the Catholic Sports Coordinating Committee (CSCC), created NSWCCC to be the driver of structured representative sport, involving students and teachers in the NSW Catholic secondary schools sector. These 10 Diocese (excluding Sydney) plus 6 associations then began competing as one body (NSWCCC) at NSW All School Championships and events. As Wilcannia-Forbes only has the one Secondary School, they enter the pathway in conjunction with the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst.

The NSWCCC acted under the authority of the Catholic Sports Coordinating Committee (CSCC) until 2012, when it was replaced by the Catholic Schools Sports Services (CSSS). In 2019, NSWCCC became an entity within the Catholic Schools NSW Sport arm of CSNSW.

As of 2022, all 6 associations except the independent schools of CGSSSA were absorbed into the diocesan pathway, including the Sydney Archdiocese.

NSW CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS COUNCIL

In 1995, the NSW Catholic Primary School Sports Council (NSW CPSSC) was established to coordinate a representative sports structure involving students and teachers in the NSW Catholic primary and central schools sector. The Council is made up of appointed representatives from each of the NSW Catholic Dioceses and is accountable to the Conference of Directors. Prior to this, students in NSW Catholic Primary Schools had limited representative opportunities in sport.

In 1982, mutually interested dioceses developed sporting exchanges in Rugby League, Netball and Hockey, where students had the chance to compete against other diocesan teams. In 1987, an Inter-Diocesan Sports Council comprising the Dioceses of Armidale, Bathurst, Canberra-Goulburn, Lismore, Maitland-Newcastle, Parramatta, Wagga Wagga, Wilcannia-Forbes and Wollongong was established. On an invitational basis, these Dioceses also took part in swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals.  Events were held in Sydney and NSW country towns and gave students attending Catholic primary schools the opportunity to represent their school, and ultimately their Diocese, in these sports.

The NSW CPSSC acted under the authority of the Catholic Sports Coordinating Committee (CSCC) until 2012, when it was replaced by the Catholic Schools Sports Services (CSSS). In 2019, NSW Catholic Primary Schools (NSWCPS) became an entity within the Catholic Schools NSW Sport arm of CSNSW.

The NSWCPS is comprised of two (2) regions eligible to participate in the NSW PSSA state fixtures.
